Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen

Seine-Maritime, Normandie

The primatial cathedral of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption in Rouen is the town's most prestigious monument. It is the seat of the archdiocese of Rouen, chief town of the ecclesiastical province of Normandy. As the archbishop of Rouen bears the title of Primate of Normandy, his cathedral has the rank of primatial. It is a Gothic construction whose first stones go back to the early Middle Ages. It has the rare feature in France of keeping its archiepiscopal palace and the surrounding annexes dating from the same period. The archaeological remains of the archiepiscopal ensemble and of the buildings that preceded it, including those of the former church of the Madeleine, and the grounds of the Cour des Maçons and the Cour d'Albane, up to the alignment taken from the Napoleonic cadastre along Rue Saint-Romain, have been listed as historic monuments since 10 May 1995.
