Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims
The exceptional handling of the new architectural techniques of the thirteenth century and the harmonious marriage of sculpted decoration with architectural elements have made Reims's Notre-Dame cathedral one of the masterpieces of Gothic art. The former abbey, which has kept a very fine eleventh-century nave, houses the remains of Archbishop Saint Remigius (440–533), who instituted the holy anointing of the kings of France. The Palais du Tau, the former archiepiscopal palace, which held an important place in the coronation ceremony, was almost entirely rebuilt in the seventeenth century.
