Cathédrale Saint-Etienne
The Cathedral of Saint-Étienne in Châlons-en-Champagne, in the Marne, was begun in the Romanesque style, continued in Gothic and completed in the Baroque period. Listed as a historic monument in 1862, it keeps from the Romanesque church consecrated in 1147 the crypt and the tower of the north transept, whose ground floor houses the treasury.
Its very open Gothic nave is a fine example of Champagne Gothic. Its stained glass is its main treasure, ranging from the 12th to the 16th and 19th centuries, with the Redemption window particularly remarkable. The treasury holds a 12th-century stone baptismal font in the Tournai style.
Self-guided visits can use a free mobile app, and themed guided tours (stained glass, tombstones, the font, building works, paintings) are organised during the Heritage Days, starting from the north transept.
