Cathédrale Notre-Dame-du-Réal d'Embrun
Built in the 12th and 13th centuries in the Lombard Romanesque style typical of the southern Alps, the Cathedral of Notre-Dame-du-Réal in Embrun, in the Hautes-Alpes, was the seat of an archdiocese that for centuries covered a vast Alpine territory, before being attached to the diocese of Gap. Its porch with columns resting on lions and its polychrome-striped bell tower make it one of the most remarkable religious buildings in the Hautes-Alpes.
The old town of Embrun, built on the promontory of the Roc overlooking the Durance and the Serre-Ponçon lake, has kept its lively lanes and the Tour Brune, a remnant of the fortifications of the former archbishopric.
