Cirque de Morgon

Hautes-Alpes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

The Morgon cirque is a natural cirque in the Hautes-Alpes, in the commune of Crots, above the Serre-Ponçon lake. Oval in shape, about four kilometres long and two wide, it lies between 1,900 and 2,381 metres, surrounded by summits: the Tête de la Vieille, the Pic de Morgon and the Pic de Charance. It holds a small lake that almost dries up in summer.

In the Middle Ages the mountain belonged to the monks of Boscodon Abbey, who grazed their flocks here. The Morgon lake is the destination of a pilgrimage on 29 June, Saint Peter's Day, around a chapel rebuilt in 1992. The pastures and the view of the Serre-Ponçon lake make this hike a classic; take water, warm clothing and choose settled weather.
