Cascades de la Turasse

Ariège, Occitanie

The Turasse waterfalls are at Roquefort-les-Cascades, a village in the Ariège that takes its name from them. They are petrifying falls: the very calcareous water deposits a mineral crust on moss and wood, forming over time a rare and fragile porous tufa.

The fall, about thirty metres high according to local sources, is reached by a short path from the car park at the foot of the site, about twenty minutes' drive from Foix. The flow is most spectacular in spring and autumn after rain; in summer the waterfall can almost dry up, and it can freeze in winter.

Visitors are asked to stay on the paths and not to walk on the tufa formations. Several hiking loops, notably from Roquefixade, pass nearby.
