Cascade d'Ars

Ariège, Occitanie

The Ars waterfall, also called the Arse waterfall, is in the commune of Aulus-les-Bains, in the Couserans, at the end of the Garbet valley, at about 1,380 m altitude. It is formed by the Arse, a tributary of the Garbet. The water falls in three leaps with a total drop of 246 m: a first fall of about a hundred metres, followed by several small cascades that gather into a final waterfall.

To see it, you must walk about an hour and a half from departmental road 8, crossing the Artigou footbridge. A loop is possible via the Guzet pond, partly on the GR 10. The site has been listed since 2018 and covers about 1,500 hectares of high Ariège mountains. In winter, the waterfall can freeze over and take on a frozen look, but access then requires finding out about snow conditions.
