Cascade de Brisecou

Saône-et-Loire, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

The Brisecou waterfall is on the heights of Autun, in Saône-et-Loire, near the village of Couhard. It is of artificial origin: in the nineteenth century, Hugues-Charles Desplaces de Martigny diverted a stream to create this fall and embellish his estate. In summer, the stream is often dry and the waterfall disappears.

It is reached by a pleasant hike in the Planoise forest. A well-known circuit starts from the Vallon lake and passes the Couhard pyramid, the church of Saint-Léger-de-Couhard and the Château du Petit Montjeu, before returning towards Autun. The loop takes about three hours. Other excursions in the area lead to Uchon, a belvedere village whose rock scree overlooks the Arroux valley, and to Mont Beuvray.
