Cascade des Buttes-Chaumont

Paris, Île-de-France

Created with the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont under the Second Empire, the waterfall pours from an artificial grotto with an opening in its roof, a masterpiece of landscape engineering by the architect Adolphe Alphand. The water falls over several levels of artificial rock before reaching the park's lake, a striking sight enhanced by the stone stalactites decorating the grotto vault.

This spectacular setting, entirely man-made on former gypsum quarries, is one of the most photographed features of this large park in north-east Paris.
