Bateliers de la Malène

Lozère, Occitanie

The Bateliers de la Malène take visitors along the Tarn through the most spectacular part of the gorges, in the Lozère. From the village of La Malène, the guided trip follows the river for about 8 km, for about an hour, to the Cirque des Baumes.

The route passes through the Détroits, the narrowest section of the canyon, where cliffs rise almost vertically above the water for several hundred metres. The traditional boats are steered by a professional boatman and carry up to six people. The commentary covers the geology, wildlife and plants of the gorges.

A shuttle brings passengers back to La Malène at the end of the trip. Some choose to be dropped on the left bank and walk back. The 2026 season is announced from April to early November, and booking ahead is recommended, especially in summer.
