Bar le Duc
Bar-le-Duc, in the Meuse, is the starting point of the Voie Sacrée, the road that during the First World War gave access to Verdun to supply the French troops fighting there. The town is proudly rediscovering its rich heritage, especially the Upper Town, protected as a conservation area since 1973. Since 2003 Bar-le-Duc has been part of the national network of 'Towns and Lands of Art and History'.
In the historic region of Lorraine, the town dates back to Antiquity, when it was a staging post on the Roman road from Reims to Toul. Capital of the county and then the duchy of Bar, it became one of the main strongholds of Lorraine.
