Auvillar
Auvillar "Alta Vista" was born in Gallo-Roman times; long an important river-boating centre, the village has kept below a chapel dedicated to Saint Catherine near the port. At the top of the village, you now find fortifications pierced by three gates surrounding the town. One of them is topped by a brick and stone clock tower from the late seventeenth century. The triangular square is surrounded by rich seventeenth- and eighteenth-century dwellings. Unique in the south-west, a circular grain hall was built in the centre in 1825. Outside the upper town stands the old Benedictine priory, now the church of Saint-Pierre.
