Bruniquel

Tarn-et-Garonne, Occitanie

Bruniquel is a village of the Tarn-et-Garonne, above the river Aveyron, at the entrance to the gorges. Tradition attributes its foundation to the Merovingian queen Brunhilda, around the year 600. The village stretches along a ridge, with flowered paths, old gates pierced in the ramparts, a belfry and stone houses adorned with twin windows.

Two castles dominate the cliff, the Old Castle and the Young Castle, which can be visited. You see notably the tower known as Queen Brunhilda's, a knights' hall with twin windows, a carved fireplace with Baroque decoration and a Renaissance gallery. The places served as a setting for the film The Old Gun (Le Vieux Fusil).

The Maison Payrol, former home of governors, houses medieval wall paintings, a Renaissance ceiling and a small museum devoted to local history. Not to be confused with the house of the Counts of Fayrols, private property.
