Vendée, Pays de la Loire

Standing on a promontory overlooking a meander of the Mère, about twenty kilometres north of Fontenay-le-Comte, this peaceful Vendée town keeps part of its old ramparts. Its Romanesque church, built during the eleventh and twelfth centuries, is abundantly decorated with sculpted motifs, the most interesting of which are those on its north portal, with notably biblical scenes. Of its twelfth-century feudal castle, mainly the keep remains, called the Mélusine tower, in reference to the fairy whom legend made the ancestor of the Lusignan family, lords of the place.
