Toulon
Toulon is organised around its harbour, one of the largest and best sheltered in the Mediterranean, home since Louis XIV to the French Navy port and its arsenal. The Vieille Darse, the former merchant port with colourful façades, concentrates the town's life with its cafés and pleasure boats moored opposite the Cours Lafayette and its daily Provençal market. The old centre, clustered around the cathedral of Sainte-Marie-Majeure, has kept typically Provençal fountains and small squares despite post-war rebuilding. Overlooking the town, Mont Faron offers by cable car an exceptional panorama of the harbour and the whole urban area. A garrison and sailors' town, Toulon has kept a popular, Mediterranean identity, between military heritage, a lively market and the scents of nearby Provence.
