Mont Faron

Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Mont Faron rises 584 metres above Toulon, overlooking the town and the naval harbour in a single sweep. This limestone summit, fortified from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to protect the port, still has an impressive set of defensive works, towers and forts that bear witness to its strategic role in French naval history.

The Beaumont tower, built in 1845, now houses the memorial to the Provence landings, devoted to the Allied landing of 15 August 1944 on the Var coast. The fairly flat summit also has a zoo specialising in breeding big cats, open since 1968.

A cable car links central Toulon directly to the summit in a few minutes, with a clear view of the whole harbour on the way up. A narrow one-way road also allows access by car, the way up and down each using a different side of the mountain.
