Rochers du Saussois

Yonne, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

The Rochers du Saussois are limestone cliffs overlooking the Yonne valley, at Merry-sur-Yonne, about thirty kilometres south of Auxerre. Their walls reach nearly 60 metres in height.

The site is one of the main climbing venues in Burgundy. Sources speak of several hundred routes, of grades 4 to 8 on the difficulty scale, but their exact number varies by guide. The Saussois is not recommended for complete beginners; for an introduction, the tourist office refers to the neighbouring Rochers de Surgy, which have more accessible routes.

From the top of the rocks, you have a view over the Yonne valley. A walking circuit lets you reach them from the Nivernais greenway, which follows the river, and canoeing is also practised in this area.
