Réserve naturelle du Romelaere
The Romelaëre ponds national nature reserve is at Clairmarais, near Saint-Omer, in the Pas-de-Calais, in the heart of the Audomarois marsh. Created by decree in 2008, it covers about 105 hectares of ponds, reedbeds, wet meadows and woodland. Its water bodies occupy former peat-extraction pits, and its management is entrusted to Eden 62, the joint syndicate of the département's natural areas.
The reserve is an important site for nesting and migratory stopover of waterbirds. About two hundred bird species have been observed there, as well as many plants and fish characteristic of wetlands.
Paths equipped with observatories let you discover it, including a route of about two kilometres accessible to people with reduced mobility. The Grange Nature of Clairmarais, former house of the reserve, serves as a reception point and starting point for discovery, with activities around the marsh and forest.
