Puits d'Enfer

Deux-Sèvres, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The Puits d'Enfer (Hell's Well) is first of all a stream, a tributary of the Sèvre Niortaise, which serves as the boundary between several communes of the Haut Val de Sèvre, including Nanteuil and Exireuil. The site owes its name to the rocky, deep valley, about 50 metres, where the stream plunges in cascade. Upstream, the Puits d'Enfer mill neighbours a water reservoir where two other streams, the Rabané and the Renardière, meet.

The place is best known for its legend: around the year 1000, a peasant of Exireuil who had wanted to bring in his hay on a Sunday, despite the storm, is said to have been swallowed up with his team at the bottom of the chasm.
