Château de Nuchèze

Deux-Sèvres, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

First recorded in 1320, the castle of Nuchèze, in the Deux-Sèvres, passed by marriage to Jacques de Montalembert, who rebuilt it from the almost intact keep from 1437. In 1559 Léon de Nuchèze bought the castle and all its lands. In 1714 the estate was bought by Jacques Thibault, sieur du Planti, and stayed in his family until 1920.

It is a defensive site overlooking the Egray valley, with a rectangular keep. Moats, a drawbridge (now gone) and firing openings confirm its defensive role. The present residence has three wings in an L, with the keep in the centre, under steep slate roofs with a polygonal stair turret, framed by two wings with curved tiles. During the Heritage Days, only the medieval garden and the chapel can be visited.
