Pradelles

Haute-Loire, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

A pilgrims' road to Saint-Gilles-du-Gard and a transhumance drove road between Languedoc and the summits of the Massif Central, the Regordane way made Pradelles a crossroads where salt, oil and wine were traded, and even munitions during the Wars of Religion. The village has kept the Romanesque chapel of Notre-Dame de Toute Grâce, rebuilt in the seventeenth century; the Rochely tower and two fortified fourteenth-century gates. One bears the name of Jeanne de la Verdette, in homage to her who defended the town in 1588. A few kilometres from the town in the Allier valley, the Benedictine priory founded in the eleventh century keeps its Romanesque portal very near the fountain of Sainte-Reine. With their fountains and carved figures on Renaissance façades, the village streets have everything to charm.
