Parc naturel régional du Morvan
The Morvan forms a mid-mountain granite massif nestled in the heart of Burgundy, on the borders of the Nièvre, Côte-d'Or, Saône-et-Loire and Yonne départements. This ancient base, surrounded by more fertile sedimentary depressions, is distinguished by its dense forests of beech and conifers as well as a traditional rural habitat still well preserved.
Created in 1970, the Morvan regional nature park now groups more than a hundred member communes and protects a territory rich in watercourses and reservoir lakes, such as Lac des Settons, developed in the nineteenth century to regulate the floating of timber to Paris. This industrial history has left a lasting mark on the landscape and the identity of the massif.
The Maison du parc, set at Saint-Brisson, serves as a reception and information point for discovering the territory, which can be explored by a dense network of hiking paths, by bicycle or by canoe on the lakes. Spring and autumn, with their marked colours, are among the best seasons to visit the Morvan.
