Palais ducal de Nevers

Nièvre, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

Built at the end of the 15th century, the ducal palace of Nevers, in the Nièvre, is considered one of the first Loire châteaux. Originally the residence of the counts and then the dukes of Nivernais, it long housed the law courts.

After its renovation in 1990 it became an annexe of the town hall and now houses the town's exhibition and reception spaces, the council chamber and a surprising aquarium. Facing the Place de la République at the top of the Nevers hill, which holds Gallo-Roman remains, its wide Renaissance façade impresses with its polygonal turrets and carved false drapery representing the prestige of the city of the dukes.
