Château de Châtillon

Nièvre, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

The Château de Châtillon, at Châtillon-en-Bazois in the Nièvre, is a large family home, still lived in, whose history spans a thousand years.

The guided tour covers the park and gardens, the old kitchen still in use, the salons, the hunting room and the Italian dining room, which holds many works of art. It tells the story of everyday life in an inhabited château.

The English-style park, which forms a green setting around the buildings, overlooks the Canal du Nivernais, the River Aron and the surrounding countryside. Below, in the former kitchen garden, the orangery gardens combine reflecting pools laid flush with the lawn and rounded box hedges that soften the symmetry of the design.
