Nevers

Nièvre, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

Built on a promontory above the Loire at its confluence with the Nièvre, Nevers has kept a dense historic centre where the Cathedral of Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte, unusual for its two opposing choirs in Romanesque and Gothic styles, dominates the roofs from its massive tower. The ducal palace, the Renaissance residence of the dukes of Nevers, and the remains of the medieval ramparts reflect the town's long strategic role on the road between Paris and the south.

Nevers has also been famous since the 16th century for its faience, a craft introduced by Italian artisans and still continued by several workshops. From the old stone bridge across the Loire, the view of the terraced town and its cathedral is one of the most recognisable sights of this Loire prefecture.
