Ossuaire de Douaumont

Meuse, Grand Est

The Douaumont Ossuary is a monument to the memory of the soldiers of the 1916 battle of Verdun. It was the setting for one of the symbols of Franco-German friendship: the handshake between François Mitterrand and Helmut Kohl on 22 September 1984. It was listed as a historic monument on 2 May 1996. Opposite the ossuary, the Douaumont national cemetery holds 16,142 graves of French soldiers, mostly Catholic, including a section of 592 headstones of Muslim soldiers. The military cemetery also contains two memorials devoted respectively to soldiers of the Jewish and Muslim faiths.
