Neuf-Brisach

Haut-Rhin, Grand Est

Neuf-Brisach is a fortified town of the Haut-Rhin, built from 1698 to Vauban's plans, after France lost Brisach. It forms a perfect octagon, surrounded by ramparts, bastions and moats, and organised in a chessboard around a vast parade ground. It is considered one of the finest examples of Vauban's military town planning and is part of the Fortifications of Vauban inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage.

You can walk along the ramparts, pass through the monumental gates, discover the church of Saint-Louis and the barracks, or visit the Vauban museum. The site is near Colmar and the German border, which allows combining it with the Alsace wine route.
