Musée de la Gendarmerie et du Cinéma de Saint Tropez
The Gendarmerie and Cinema Museum is in Saint-Tropez (Var), place Blanqui, in the town's former gendarmerie, made famous by the Gendarme film series with Louis de Funès, shot on the spot. It opened its doors on 24 June 2016.
The museum offers two routes. One is devoted to the authentic history of this gendarmerie and of the institution, with objects, uniforms and documents that trace the daily life of gendarmes. The other tells the history of cinema in Saint-Tropez, of its shoots and of how the village became a film set, in connection with the Gendarme comedies.
Temporary exhibitions regularly complete the permanent route. In 2026, the museum celebrates its tenth anniversary with the exhibition "From barracks to museum… 10 years already", which shows the evolution of the building through photographs taken before, during and after its renovation, as well as posters of past exhibitions.
The place will please families, lovers of popular cinema and those interested in local history, in the centre of Saint-Tropez.
