Mines d'Argent des Rois Francs

Deux-Sèvres, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The Silver Mines of the Frankish Kings, at Melle in the Deux-Sèvres, are presented as the oldest visitable silver mines in Europe. They were worked from the 7th to the end of the 10th century, in Charlemagne's time, to supply the mint with precious metal.

The visit includes a 3D film on the history of the mines and on mining and metallurgical techniques, a guided underground tour of 350 metres of galleries and a 3D film explaining coin making. The Carolingian garden can be visited freely.
