Marcolès
Marcolès is a village of the Cantal Châtaigneraie, in the south-west of the Cantal. It is ranked among the Most Beautiful Villages of France and is part of the Petites Cités de Caractère network. Its medieval town is remarkably preserved: narrow lanes, stone houses with slate roofs, flowered little squares and remains of old fortifications are discovered on foot, at the pace of a quiet stroll.
The village is also known as the birthplace, around 1305, of Jean de Roquetaillade, a Franciscan, preacher and alchemist of the Middle Ages. Marcolès is a pleasant stop between Aurillac and the Truyère gorges, and combines well with the discovery of the neighbouring villages of the Châtaigneraie.
