Lyons-la-Forêt

Eure, Normandie

This peaceful village, which owes its name to the Gaulish god Lug, is nestled in the heart of the Lyons state forest, held to be one of the most beautiful beech forests in France and in the Middle Ages the favourite hunting ground of the dukes of Normandy. The village itself is made up of magnificent half-timbered houses, abundantly flowered, with tile or slate roofs pierced with delightful dormers. They were rebuilt in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, as were the town hall and the covered market, Lyons-la-Forêt having been ravaged by a fire in 1590.
