Le Marais du Grand Hazé
The Grand Hazé marsh covers about 200 hectares, straddling the communes of Briouze and Bellou-en-Houlme, in the Orne. It occupies a basin carved in an ancient substrate and is the largest wetland of the département.
The site brings together several environments: heaths, meadows, ponds and peat bogs. There are rare plants such as water plantain and buttercup, and varied fauna made up of birds, insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles and bats. It benefits from triple protection: Natura 2000 listing, a prefectoral biotope protection order and the status of a departmental sensitive natural area. To maintain the habitats, extensive grazing is provided by Camargue horses and Highland cattle. Local legends are attached to this Briouze marsh. A path and an observatory let you watch it.
