Le Lac Chambon

Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Lac Chambon is a lake of volcanic origin in the Monts Dore massif, in the Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne. It was formed by the Tartaret volcano, which blocked the bed of the Couze Chambon. At 877 m altitude, it is shallow (4 m) but fairly large (60 ha). Its shores are very indented, except to the north, where a beach has been laid out for swimming and water sports. A path goes round it in about an hour. Part of the path was redeveloped in 2006, with sections on stilts that follow the shore through marshy areas. The walk round the lake is 3.5 km.
