Lac de Guéry

Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Set at more than 1,250 metres' altitude in the Monts Dore, Lac de Guéry fills the crater of an ancient volcano and stands out as the highest natural lake in Auvergne. Its cold waters, surrounded by vast pastures, stay frozen for much of the winter, giving a decidedly Nordic landscape in the heart of the Massif Central.

The site has long attracted anglers, with brown trout in abundance, but also walkers enjoying the calm of this windswept high plateau. The nearby Col de Guéry, with its basalt columns, completes the visit of an area rich in geological curiosities.

The lake is easily reached by the road from Le Mont-Dore to La Bourboule, making it a simple stop to include when discovering the Monts Dore, in any season, though summer is best for swimming and light water sports.
