Le Jardin de Berchigranges

Vosges, Grand Est

The Berchigranges garden is at Granges-Aumontzey, in the Vosges, on a former granite quarry at about 650 metres' altitude. Thierry Dronet acquired there in 1978 an abandoned quarry planted with conifers, where there was no garden. Tonnes of earth and long years of work made it possible to create a dozen themed gardens, with very different atmospheres, keeping a link with the neighbouring Vosges forest. You find for example the Ladies' Chamber, enclosed by hornbeams and planted with scented flowers, or the Bohemian Garden, between alpine meadow and prairie garden. Springs feed basins and small streams, and several thousand perennials, bulbs and rare species are grown there. A book was devoted to the garden in 2008. A 2026 page reports it temporarily closed: it is better to check before going.
