Le Grand Steinberg

Moselle, Grand Est

The Grand Steinberg is a sandstone wall in the Pays de Bitche, in Moselle, in the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park, in the heart of the Hanau forest. The cliffs of the region are cut in the pink Vosges sandstone, which erosion has sculpted into cavities, arches and unexpected shapes.

A path leads to the foot of the wall. The site is next to the Erbenfelsen arch, a sandstone wall nearly 450 metres long and 25 to 30 metres high, pierced by an arch about 12 metres wide by 8 high. This rock hosts peregrine falcons and ravens: from February to early July, you should not go near it.

There is little information specific to the Grand Steinberg; enquire locally before setting off.
