Le Bateau à roue de Royans
The paddle boat 'Royans-Vercors' was built in 1991 on the model of 19th-century Mississippi paddle steamers. It carries up to 140 passengers and sails on the Isère at the foot of the Vercors massif, in the Drôme.
The commented cruise lasts about an hour and a half. Boarding is at Saint-Nazaire-en-Royans, a village dominated by its aqueduct, or at La Sône. Along the way passengers see the aqueduct, the village of La Sône with its old factories and châteaux, then reed beds and white willows. These wetlands are home to many water birds and are among the main birdwatching sites in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region; binoculars can be useful.
Trips run in season, from April to September according to the 2026 programme. They can be combined with a visit to the Thaïs cave or the Petrifying Fountains garden, both nearby.
