La cascade de Bérard
The Bérard waterfall is at Vallorcine, in Haute-Savoie, in the Bérard valley, at 1,430 metres' altitude. It is fed by the Eau de Bérard, a tumultuous torrent that comes down from the slopes of the Aiguilles Rouges, and lies in the Aiguilles-Rouges national nature reserve.
You reach it from the Col des Montets by a pretty path through the undergrowth, in a short half-hour's walk. A footbridge built on the right bank of the torrent, installed since summer 2013, lets you get closer to the fall. The Tour du Pays du Mont-Blanc path passes nearby, and a via ferrata route faces the waterfall, above the torrent. In winter, when the water freezes, the fall attracts ice-climbing enthusiasts.
The place also evokes the memory of Joseph-Samuel Farinet, a famous counterfeiter, who is said to have taken refuge in the neighbouring cave known as the Grotte à Farinet.
