Grotte de la Salamandre
The Salamandre cave is an aven in the Gard, reached via Méjannes-le-Clap, in the commune of Saint-Privat-de-Champclos, from which it is separated by the Cèze gorges. Its main hall is impressive: about 120 m long, 80 m wide and 15 to 35 m high. The chasm was first explored in spring 1965 by speleologists from Uzès and Nîmes, after a descent of about fifty metres.
The site can be discovered in several ways: from a viewpoint offering a panoramic view of the cavity, on a guided visit, via the Grand Rappel, a 50 m abseil that lets you discover the immense hall from its ceiling, or on the Coulisses, two hours of caving in the hidden galleries of the cave. These sporting activities suit visitors ready to kit up.
