Grotte de Bara-Bahau

Dordogne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The Bara-Bahau cave, or Bara-Bao, is a decorated cave in the commune of Le Bugue, in the Vézère valley, in the Dordogne. Its name is an Occitan onomatopoeia meaning "badaboom", in reference to the collapsed blocks visible in the first hall. A private property open to the public, it has been listed as a historic monument since 1961.

The cave has geological interest, notably through its eccentric concretions, and above all prehistoric interest, through the cave engravings it houses. A bear den 35,000 years ago, it then welcomed prehistoric people, up to Gallo-Roman times. The entrance is just behind the reception, which makes the visit easy and pleasant with the family.
