Grand Aquarium de Touraine

Indre-et-Loire, Centre-Val de Loire

The Grand Aquarium de Touraine, at Lussault-sur-Loire near Amboise, opened in 1994 with the aim of introducing the species that live in the Loire. The river's fish, sometimes impressively large, are shown in tanks that recreate their habitat.

The route was later extended with areas devoted to tropical waters and a shark tunnel. Visitors also meet turtles, piranhas and alligators, among children's favourite animals.

The visit usually takes one to two hours and suits families and school groups, who find a practical way to explore freshwater and marine habitats. In the Loire valley, the aquarium combines easily with a visit to the region's châteaux, especially on a rainy day.
