Fort de Queuleu
The Fort de Queuleu, in the Moselle, belongs to the first ring of fortifications around Metz. Building work, begun by the French in 1867-1868, was largely taken over by the Germans during the Annexation.
Between October 1943 and August 1944 a special camp run by the Gestapo was set up in Barracks II/Casemate A. Resistance fighters, saboteurs, smugglers, draft dodgers and hostages were interned here. Conditions were terrible: prisoners were interrogated under torture and kept blindfolded with their hands and feet tied. Thirty-six people died here and four managed to escape.
