Forêt de Tronçais
The state forest of Tronçais covers nearly 10,600 hectares in the north-west of the Allier. It was actively replanted with sessile oaks from 1670 at the instigation of Colbert, who wanted to guarantee France a lasting supply of timber for its naval arsenals.
This far-sighted choice produced some of the finest oaks in France, many of them in century-old stands protected as biological reserves, such as the famous Colbert stand. Ponds, hiking trails and the scenic road through the forest make it a popular place for walks all year round, especially colourful in autumn.
