Domaine de Chamarande

Essonne, Île-de-France

Owned by the Essonne département since 1978, the Domaine de Chamarande is listed as a historic monument. Several restoration projects were carried out in the 1990s. The 98-hectare park was redesigned by the landscape architect Jacques Sgard and, in 1999, the departmental archives moved into the courtyard and outbuilding wings of the château.

The département then decided to devote the whole site to culture and creation. It combines an art centre and historic buildings in a landscape labelled 'Jardin Remarquable'. An unusual heritage and cultural site, it has a year-round programme, including a multidisciplinary summer season, the 'Scènes Croisées'. Free access to the park, activities, exhibitions, workshops and shows brings in a wide public.
