Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne

Ain, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The historic main town of the Dombes, in the Ain, Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne has a remarkably consistent old centre around its 15th-century wooden market hall: half-timbered houses, turrets, ramparts and the keep of its old feudal castle.

The town also has the apothecary of the Hôtel-Dieu, one of the best preserved in France, with its painted 17th-century faience jars. The market hall, still in use, hosts a lively weekly market that has continued the town's trading tradition since the Middle Ages.
