Château du Fayel

Oise, Hauts-de-France

The Château du Fayel, in the Oise, was built from 1650 to 1655 by the architect Jacques Bruant for Marshal Philippe de La Motte-Houdancourt, Viceroy of Catalonia and Duke of Le Fayel. Its interior was entirely remodelled in the 18th century.

A central block flanked by two wings opens at ground level onto a courtyard framed by lime trees to the north and, to the south, onto a French formal garden restored from plans attributed to Le Nôtre. The five salons follow one another in a row on two levels, on either side of the hall and its monumental staircase. Their décor has not changed since the 18th century, and the family portraits are still in their original places.

The park, designed in the 17th century following the principles of the Versailles landscape gardener, is open for walks.
