Château des Quat'Sos
The Château des Quat'Sos, at Rions in the Gironde, was built in the 12th century on an earlier fortress erected on the initiative of the Plantagenets; in 1254 Henry III of England had it enlarged. The name is a corruption of 'four sisters', recalling the resemblance of the four round towers at its corners.
It was a formidable fortress, besieged several times, especially during the Hundred Years' War. Its double fortified wall has survived on the south side, where the castle best keeps its medieval fortress look. The south-west tower, known as 'la Thomasse', rises some thirty metres above the Garonne plain.
