Château des Clayes-sous-Bois

Yvelines, Île-de-France

The Château des Clayes-sous-Bois, in the Yvelines, a former fortified castle, was demolished in the 14th century during the peasant revolts known as the Jacqueries, and then rebuilt. In the 15th century it belonged to Guillaume Poyet, president of the Parlement of Paris.

Attached for a time to the royal domain, it became in the 16th century the residence of Diane de Poitiers (1499-1566), the famous favourite of Henri II, and then of the future Henri III. Destroyed during the Second World War, it now houses the municipal library of Les Clayes-sous-Bois.
