Château de Villeneuve-Loubet
Overlooking the Provençal village and church of Villeneuve-Loubet, the castle was founded in the thirteenth century by Romée de Villeneuve, constable and seneschal of Provence. Nearly two hundred years later, the fortress reached its historical peak: on 18 June 1538, François I, King of France, signed there the Truce of Nice, ending the eighth Italian War, an event celebrated by a Renaissance festival commemorating his visit to Villeneuve-Loubet. Today the castle is lived in by descendants of the Panisse Passis family, who inherited the building at the end of the eighteenth century. Unfortunately visits are rare, and only in July and August can tourists discover the inner courtyard and the exotic gardens.
