Château de Verteuil
Overlooking the Charente valley, the medieval château of Verteuil has belonged to the La Rochefoucauld family for more than a thousand years. Fascinating for its architectural riches, it is fascinating too for the story of its famous royal visitors.
In the eighteenth century, Louis-Alexandre de La Rochefoucauld, a friend of Jefferson, gave unwavering support to the American cause. A member of the Academy of Sciences and president of the Royal Society of Medicine, he was elected with his friends Condorcet, Buffon and Lavoisier to the American Philosophical Society of Philadelphia, strengthening ties between the two countries. A restoration campaign is planned for the terraced gardens above the Charente.
